RFID labels just around the corner

Earlier this year I read an article on RFID and the state of technology …

… for those of you not up to speed, RFID technology is basically the idea of tracking items by RF (Radio Frequency) … tagging an inventory of items with small RFID devices … a scanner can read these really tiny and supposedly inexpensive “devices” by way of RF.

Anyways … at that time their were 5-6 major players working on the infrastructure/devices/etc to put into place.

From that article I gathered there were many obstacles faced by RFID, namely cost and technical challenges, security, among other things … things were looking bleak …

Now fast forward to end of 2004 … my brother works for a major plastics and labeling manufacturing company (he worked on the battery test labels you know see all over the place).

Well, he’s now in the stages of testing an experimental RIFD adhesive label complete with embedded antennae and chip.

He’s showed me a prototype label and it definately convinced me RF technology on a mass scale will be a reality within 2-3 years … and just as common place as those security tags on consumer items (except much smarter and much less noticable, etc).

Inventory tracking is just one of the many things about to get 100 times easier with RFID.

I am a label supplier and try to stay a step ahead of my clients needs. Can you give some details on the procdure of adding an rfid tag to a label and how to program and or make it live.

I have many large manufactures of the metal stamping industry and and commercial OEMs which will need this technology in the very near future if not a\tn the present time.
