Macromedia Flash Mobile Certification … just an idea …

August 10th, 2005 by Scott Janousek

I know many of you reading this entry are probably Macromedia certified in something or rather … either that or you’re a subject matter expert who “boycotts” the exams :)

Anyways, I don’t think anyone can contest that certification exams proliferate learning and give technology exposure …

Certification Exams are always an additional indication that a technology is worth learning, knowing, and preaching. :)

In addition to Macromedia’s current list, I hereby propose a “Flash Mobile” Developer Certification … aka Flash Lite Designer/Developer Cert. Hey, if there is a J2ME exam, why not a FL exam??

With the pushes Macromedia has been making over the last couple years … and now some really great advances in Flash Lite (1.1 and the upoming Deuce), I’d like to propose a “Flash Mobile Certification” to be created by Macromedia (and the FL community) … as far as I am aware, this doesn’t exist (yet).

I feel this test would a.) generate revenue for Macromedia & testing companies, b.) proliferate Flash Mobile technology, and c.) advance the mobile technology with more subject experts who take the time and effort to master the technology.

I dunno, I just feel like from what I see posted on the message boards, etc I feel like it’s about time Macromedia started putting something together … maybe some of us Flash Lite folks could start putting together a “Beta” exam?

Anyways, just an idea. I’ll leave this open for comments and suggestions.

well believe it or not I think it already exists for Flash Cast:

But it would be a good idea for Flash Lite in general, that said are there enough resources available? Especially when it comes to practical knowledge of say Japan.

    Nick, thanks for the link.

Yeah Flash Lite is a bit harder than others to have a complete exam for. You have the coding side of things which is one thing, and interface design “rules” I guess that you should follow as kind of “best practice”, but there’s that whole world beyond that of deploying the content into carriers, which is pretty unknown area of 95% of FL developers at the moment. Plus it’s different for each carrier, in each country …. know what I mean?

Great idea though, I think certification defintely helps with credibility of a product but also with credibility with clients.

It wouldn’t encompass everything … I don’t think the other exams even attempt that.

But it is possible to test knowledge of specific areas … just need to figure those out.

I agree that there is a lot of hands-on/real world experience involved … even more so than the other Macromedia products & services.

11/29/2005 - Just an addedum … Officially, there is no Flash Cast Certification. You can guess that graphic was self generated. Maybe sometime soon there might be. :)
