1st Boston Flash Platform User Group meeting

Thursday, December 29th, 2005

BFPUG

We had our first Boston Flash Platform User Group meeting tonight.

Perhaps a few hand fulls of people showed. Overall a good turn out for that “neck of the woods” (literally). The Massachusetts Medical Society in Waltham was a nice place to meet for the 1st time. I think they publish the New England Journal of Medicine which Harvard and a bunch of other institutions collobrate on.

It was also interesting to hear about Flash within the medical community, as a multimedia tool. Something you don’t hear people talk about too often.

O’Reilly Emerging Technology Conference 2006

Wednesday, December 28th, 2005

etech

Don’t know too much about this conference, but looks like it is geared more towards the entrepreneurial crowd?

In any case, Adobe will be there.

Chamber’s is speaking on Flex … some of the other sessions are on AJAX, & other emerging technologies.

Teens get busted MMSing pics of marijuana, buy locations

Teens get busted MMSing pics of marijuana, buy locations

A bunch of Massachusetts based kids got nabbed trying to sell pot via their cellphones. This is one of those cases where they got the idea right, but forgot the legal ramifications.

Viral marketing on cellphones, good idea. Selling pot via cell, not such a good idea … maybe in Amsterdam? :)

iriver u10 “Thumb-Thing” korean site

Tuesday, December 27th, 2005

This is a good site for u10 content, if you can figure your way around the korean based interface.

http://u10.iriver.co.kr/

If you check out the “inside thumbthing” section, there are a couple 1.1 games in there that didn’t come preinstalled (or at least not on the US shipped version with fimware 1.2x).

XML For Flash - book review

Tuesday, December 27th, 2005

XML for Flash by Sas Jacobs, is Friends of Ed’s latest reference on the wonderful world of XML and Flash.

I imagine everyone reading this review will have at least some experience with XML. Whether you’ve just seen it, actually used it, or built the foundation of your latest rich internet application untop of it … XML is everywhere: desktop, enterprise, mobile. If you’re a designer or developer, it’s become an essential enabling technology, especially for flash applications … not to mention Flex apps.

Essentially this book replaces the legacy Flash XML StudioLab that came out circa 2001. That book had a lot “examples”. Hence the “studiolabs” name.

Friends of Ed redesign

I just noticed FOE (Friends of Ed), just got a makeover. I like the new design. Simple colors, and simple layout to boot.

Flash 8 Essentials book

Also, I just noticed the new Flash 8 essentials is out after a few months “on the boil” ( as Dale Rankin would say :) ).

Web Designer’s Success Guide: how to profit from freelance web design

Monday, December 26th, 2005

On a whim I bought this book written by Kevin.

Being a developer first and foremost, I had some initial reservations about purchasing the book … however, I had always regretted not attending his session at FITC (it was the only one that was targeted towards the creative “business” ) … so after reading the sample chapter, I figured I might give the book a shot … try to gain a few tips here and there from a developer’s point of view.
