FITC 2006 - It's a Mobile World!

Next month at FITC (Flash in the Can) 2006, I’ll be participating in a panel discussion currently entitled “It’s a mobile world” - Flash and portable devices Build it and they will come.

Needless to say, we should have a lively discussion on the state of Flash mobile, device convergence, fragmentation, and other topics that are sure to “pop up”.

At this time, it’s pretty much an open forum (in moderated form of course), so anything is possible.

What’s more … I don’t think it’s one of those deadly 9:00 am scheduled sessions, so there’s no real excuse for missing out.

Got Flash Lite 1.1 pre-installed? Nokia 3250 does.

Tuesday, March 28th, 2006

nokia 3250

Just a quick informal review of the Nokia 3250 which I just received recently.

If you’re looking for a more in depth review, then goggle around, or perhaps check out this link.

Yes, this is one of the first of several Nokia phones that has Flash Lite 1.1 pre-installed.

Pre-installed, the magical word that makes Flash Lite developers (well at least those in the US & EMEA regions) giddy.

Of course, Sony Ericsson beat them to the punch (or at least in EMEA region)!

But at first impressions, Nokia’s Flash Lite implementation seems to perform pretty darn well.

Ambient Umbrella - a “smart” umbrella!

Monday, March 27th, 2006

ambient umbrella

The folks at Ambient Devices are at it again. They have a new product called the Ambient Umbrella.

The umbrella pulsates the handle according to the local weather it receives via accuweather.com. The rate of the pulses corresponds to the likelihood of rain.

Interested? Read more about the product. It’s slated to be released later this year (possibly even as soon as this summer).

Their other products include the legacy ambient orb, weather beacon, executive dashboard, and 5-day weather forecaster.

In addition, they are slated to release an “e-ink weather wizard” later this year. Another commercial product using e-ink!

Without further ado, here’s the recap of this week’s news (in no particular order).

We had an Adobe Flash Mobile User Group presentation put on by Chris Blair of Zodal. Chris talked about a Flash Lite 2.0 gaming platform they are developing.

ActionScript 3.0 BFPUG meeting

Wednesday, March 22nd, 2006

The latest BFPUG (Boston Flash Platform User Group) occured tonight. The topic, ActionScript 3.0.

About 30 people showed. Probably more … remotely. There was a live cast going on you see.

Keith Peters did a quick history of AS, and then Sam Robbins carried on with some of the new features/capabilities … as well as a couple of walkthroughs (one on the new event system and the other on DisplayList).

I was able to follow along readily, so looks like AS 3.0 isn’t quite the jump I thought it would be. Clients will ask for it at some point.

Loading, Parsing, and Locally Storing XML in Flash Lite 2

For Flash Lite developers getting into ActionScript 2 (AS 2) and Flash Lite 2 (FL 2) … there is a recent devnet article entitled: Loading, Parsing, and Locally Storing XML in Flash Lite 2 available.

Along with XML processing, there is some good information on MSO’s, and how they differ from their desktop brethren.

Jonathan does a good job at explaining it all. So check out the article.

Mobile Device Baton - What’s in your pocket?

Sunday, March 19th, 2006

A while back someone started the whole “musical baton” idea (people blogged about what they had in their music collection, etc).

This circulated around the blog-o-sphere. Not sure where or how it all started … However, I am now proposing something along similar lines … the “mobile device baton”.

If you receive the baton … post a recent photo of your devices and some interesting facts (see below) … then forward to 5 people who haven’t posted yet.

The important part is to take a photo of your device collection. This is the easiest way for folks to see what you’ve got.

FITC Scholarship Program … 10 free tickets

FITC 2006 Scholarship

The staff of this year’s 2006 FITC conference recogonize that students are sometimes strapped for cash.

This year they are offering “10 Scholarships” to a lucky few who qualify.

Rules and conditions apply, so check out the info posted. The due date for your application is April 15th.

… and even if you don’t qualify as a student, I think this conference remains one of the best out there in terms of diversity in multimedia and interactivity. Don’t miss out.

Last year’s was great and I’m sure it’ll much of the same this year.

The viliv p1 store is up!

Wednesday, March 15th, 2006

viliv_shipping.png

Episodic Media just put up the viliv p1 store, so you can go and put your order in. Price is $499.

Update: 03/16/2006 1:39 am - seems like they might be making last minute tweaks to the site, so it might not be a bad idea to wait a day to put in your final order (they probably won’t even ship orders till end of the week anyways).
