SavaJe … a possible competitor in the mobile UE space?

Wednesday, May 31st, 2006

Not to steal any of the thunder from the recent Flash Lite 2 BREW announcement, but I thought this might be of interest … not to worry, I have quite a few Flash Lite 2 posts I’ll make shortly! I just feel like this should be blogged.

Those of you who might accuse me of some sort of “Flash Mobile Blasphemy”, just hear me out … as a rule of business, it’s always good to know who the “other guys” are. You know, the supposed competitors. That way you can take steps to beat them.

Flash Lite 2.1 for BREW announced

Wednesday, May 31st, 2006

brewlogo

Yep, this is now public knowledge.

The Flash Lite implementation for BREW will be 2.1 . 2.1? Yep. If you check out the FAQ, you can glean a couple new features that differientates it from 2.0 …

Flash Lite 2.1 is based on Flash Player 7 and supports ActionScript 2.0. Key features include XML data handling, persistent data management, inline text support, keypad/keyboard support, XML sockets and more.

Also, this Flash Lite implementation will be installed OTA (over the air). This is what many of us were talking about in 2005. Now it is (almost) a reality here in the US.

Image Resizer: resize your blog image posts

Tuesday, May 30th, 2006

Not all blogs support (dynamic) resizing of posted images … and let’s face it, loading up Photoshop or Fireworks just to resize an image or two is overkill (not to mention kind of silly in my opinion).

What you say? I’ll just be lazy and scale the original image(s) in HTML within a post? Bad idea, especially if the images are from a high resolution camera, etc. :)

What’s one to do if an image doesn’t fit a blog posting?

Well, quite a while back, I discovered that the Image Resizer found in Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP provides a quick and easy tool to repurpose images for blog postings.

PSP Flash content found on pspupdates.qj.net

Tuesday, May 30th, 2006

Hayden Porter ran across this listing of PSP flash content at PSPupdates.qj.net. It looks like he may have stumbled onto the very first unofficial PSP Flash content aggregator.

I’m fairly sure we’ll hear more about PSP content aggregation from others, soon.

Making cell phones simple is hard - CNN

Monday, May 29th, 2006

A recent article on CNN talks about handset usability. There are some really interesting quotes in this article. It’s also a quick read.

AD&D delights

Saturday, May 27th, 2006

I had the urge to stop at a Memorial Day weekend yard sale this morning on the way to get some gardening supplies. Good thing I did.

Yard sales are always a bit of a gamble, but this one looked like a good bet … lots of knick-knacks.

Imagine my surprise when I found a box full of classic AD&D (do I need to spell it out? Perhaps not on this list … but, yes, Dungeons and Dragons!) … and for $10 no less … all of it in good to excellent condition, even some “classics”.

216 Million Flash Lite-Enabled Handsets by 2010?

Wednesday, May 24th, 2006

ASH caught this recent press release:

“STRATEGY ANALYTICS Predicts Rapid Cellphone Flash-Lite(TM) Integration; From 38 Million Flash Lite-Enabled Handsets in 2005 to 216 Million by 2010.

And yes, Strategy Analytics appears to be a legit source.

Who’ll be buying all these devices? Let’s hope Y-Gen! … and perhaps some X-Gen gadgeteers like myself.

Speaking of which, with all these Flash devices lately, I’m seriously considering getting a bandoliero to hold them all.

iriver clix is running Flash Lite 2

Monday, May 22nd, 2006

iriver clix

I just received the clix today. I whipped up a quick $version test, and it’s coming back FL 7,1,51,0.

So, yes, looks like Flash Lite 2 (in some form or another) is preinstalled.

The UI lag everyone was complaining about on the u10 (FL 1.1) is pretty much non-existent with the clix. You can tell the speed difference immediately upon using it.

Seriously, it’s quick … on the level of an ipod now. Honestly, I’m not sure if they changed the CPU inside or not, but it’s pretty clear, that Flash Lite 2 is playing a large part in the speed factor.

Nabaztag - a Wifi Smart Rabbit

nabaztag

OK, so occasionally, I’ll post a gadget or device that isn’t Flash enabled. But before you jump down my throat, check this little interactive bunny out. What’z up, doc?!

Ok, ok, it’s a little bit on the “cutsey” side of things, but the Nabaztag looks like a bit of fun compared to the ambient orb myself and many others have.

Clearly it’s a unique take on the glanceable technology that has been out for years, but with a different spin and more features.

Here is what thinkgeek had to say about the little critter:

momoBoston (Mobile Monday Boston) … focus on entertainment 06/05/2006

Friday, May 19th, 2006

I just caught this off the momoboston site … mobile entertainment is the focus for the upcoming June 5, 2006 meeting.

Mobile Entertainment is the topic!? … but, what, no Flash Lite? COME ON! Guess the Flash Lite crowd in Boston will have to represent. :)

Oh, yes, supposedly, it will be streamed.
