AD&D delights

I had the urge to stop at a Memorial Day weekend yard sale this morning on the way to get some gardening supplies. Good thing I did.

Yard sales are always a bit of a gamble, but this one looked like a good bet … lots of knick-knacks.

Imagine my surprise when I found a box full of classic AD&D (do I need to spell it out? Perhaps not on this list … but, yes, Dungeons and Dragons!) … and for $10 no less … all of it in good to excellent condition, even some “classics”.

Now, I haven’t played in a decade or so, but some of the modules brought back some found memories.

I was one of those DM’s that was into realism. In fact, we had the critical hit table before it was even invented (heads would come off regularly, legs severed … “you’ve only got one arm! Come on you pansy” …sorry, but I digress :) … I also remember a time when the characters ran out of the light (torches). I made them play in virtual darkness until they found a light source. Lots of other stories … looking back on it all it, I was quite a harsh DM (chaotic good, perhaps?). But the groups seemed to like the gameplay. It was a lot of fun, actually.

I often wonder what’s it like these days to play, though I can’t see myself getting into character again. Too easy to pick up a good multiplayer game!

All in all, it’s good to see the game continues today. I wonder if all the imagination is still there? I haven’t looked at any new modules lately.

Back to the treasure I found … there were three modules that stood out in the collection, all mint. All classics (Gygax).

S4 The Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth (never played it! Looks interesting though)
G1-2-3 Against the Giants (my personal favorite outside of the D series)
S3 Expedition to the Barrier Peaks (the sci-fi “cross over”)

Also, some other DragonLance modules (I used to read the books all the time back in the day):

DL3 - Dragons of Hope
DL6 - Dragons of Ice

And some misc modules:

WG4 The forgotten Temple of Tharizdun
Maze of the Riddling Minotaur
B4 The Lost City
X5 The Template of Doom

Plus some manuals (2nd edition) … unfortunately, no 1st edition. Those might be collectibles!

Oriental Adventures
AD&D Players Handbook (2nd)
AD&D Dungeon Masters Guide (2nd)
Monster Manual (2nd)
Unearthed Arcana (2nd)

But to the point of the post. I thought it would be a waste for all of it to end up at the dump … especially when I hear the new stuff isn’t quite as good? … but I’m only taking someone else’s word for it … again, I haven’t played the new rules. Comment on that if you’d like.

If you’re interested, drop me an email. Otherwise, I might post these on ebay. Sorry, you’ll have to pay in gold pieces. I don’t except silver, or copper. However, I will consider trades for a +5 Holy Avenger, a cloak of invisibility, or bag of holding. But seriously, if you’re interested, get in touch.

:)

P.S. Whew, all this has made me want to replay the original Ultima series and old skool Sierra games. Time to bring out those 3.5″ and 5.25″’s … do they even make 5.25 drive that’s compatible with XP?! I suppose it would work. :)

    Scott,

There was a reason I was waiting 3 years for Neverwinter Nights to come out. Some of the modules that you listed above are now NWN modules that you can download and play multiplayer.

Its been 3 years since NWN came out and now I can’t wait to see NWN 2 (http://www.nwn2.com/)

I wasn’t a DM, but my buddies and I always got together on Saturday/Sunday and played for 4/5 hours. It was awesome…I miss those days. :-)

Ericd. Yeah, S3 was the strange scifi adventure. The only thing I remember from playing that one, is a character tried to use a “phaser” type weapon … unfortunately, they used it backwards … instantly vaprorizing themselves! :)

JDanylko, Cool. I’ll have to check it out.

… I wonder if Jester will comment on this post? I know he plays a bit … I’m curious about the new rules and how they differ (for better or worse).
