I posted about this device a few posts ago … I recently picked up the Samsung YP-T9. It’s shipping here in the US (as well as other regions). Your local Best Buy or other electronics store may have it in stock.

Samsung YP-T9

The UI is pretty slick, and the device comes with Flash Lite preinstalled. Not sure if it’s 1.1 or 2.x, though. Simply because I haven’t been able to successfully run content on it, so far … hence, the reason for the post.

Yes, all my initial attempts to run custom Flash Lite content on it have thus far failed. I’ve tried every variation I can think of: various .swf builds, multiple locations on the device, etc etc etc. But no luck (yet). It might be possible, but I’m basing that on the comment they make in the docs:

“T9 comes with built-in flash games which are managed as individual files so new games can be downloaded to the device or deleted to make room for more. (Games included in the T9: “Baseballâ€? and “Pizza Deliveryâ€?)”

Thing is, I can’t even find the individual preinstalled .swf games on the device. This makes me think they keep the Flash Lite contents tied up in custom files on the device (the .DAT files perhaps?) … or maybe they are hidden somehow (they are pretty well protected if that is the case).

I tried reformatting the device from MTP to a UMS build of the firmware (thinking it might open up the device a bit). It did, but not to the extent that Flash Lite content would run.

Here is some of the folder structure once UMS is enabled …

Samsung YP-T9, directory #4
Samsung YP-T9, directory #3
Samsung YP-T9, directory #2
Samsung YP-T9, directory #1

You’ll notice there are a bunch of .dat files in the SYSTEM folder. I think one of these contains the bytecode for the games (but not 100% sure).

The preinstalled Flash Lite game graphics are very well done: a baseball and pizza delivery game. Performance, however, is a bit lacking (there is a noticable pause between key input and gameplay … along the lines of what one finds on the iRiver Clix). However, for casual gaming this is fine once you adapt to it … the graphics more than make up for the fact.

Has anyone successfully gotten custom Flash Lite content running over in China or the UK? Please post your comment if you are able to do it on your build of the device. Hopefully, there is a way, but it might be the case that the device is locked (for the time being).

I can see some potential if they link their synch software to include pushing Flash Lite content from an online content distribution site.

Aparrently, they are currently working on some sort of iTunes scenario where download music and videos from a site down to the device. No mention of Flash Games, however … it’s not up yet, only the synch software is provided so far.

But … all in all, a nice PMP from Samsung that does everything you need: Music, Video, FM, Recording, Photos, Games (well, the 2 preinstalled that is), etc in a nice form factor.

There’s a great review here.

Just thought I would mention that this device is also available in Canada (at least at the Best Buy).

  2. Scott Janousek Says:

Speaking of Samsung devices, here’s the YP-K3, a follow up to the YP-K5.

  3. amelie Says:

Does this phone have a Flash UI?
I wounder if the FL player runs for the UI what happens when you start other flash content?
Does it start a second instance of the FL engine or does it load the SWF on the same instance running the UI?

What happens when you make a copy of one of the _SYSDATA_GAME_… files and rename it to _SYSDATA_GAME_myflash?
After reboot the system may be able to add an item in your Flash content menu’.
    Its just a random thought…

  4. Scott Janousek Says:

I am not positive the UI is Flash Lite.

This depends on the implementation. I know that the viliv p1 actually loads in Flash content into the loaded Flash Lite UI. Not sure on this device.

The SYSDATA files are (pseudo) shared objects similiar to the ones found on the iRiver devices. They are not flash, merely persistent data files to keep track of game stats, etc.

  5. kingjew Says:

I was on the phone for over an hour yesterday with Samsung 2nd tier support. They tried to claim that the flash games are in the firmware. And maybe one day they will open up the firmware to enable the features promised on every website advertising it. I am very pissed.

I have so many flash games I want to put on this. Great mp3 player but why lie about the features or at least say a future feature will be added. What a bunch of putz’s over there.

I have the K5 and the T9. The t9 video support stinks. Audio is out of sync with no option for anything to change. It only says convert? Kinda shady….

any one know of a better svi convertor? Please email me if so kingjew@gmail.com

  6. Scott Janousek Says:

Normally, I’d say they lost something in the translation … but I think it’s fairly certain what they shipped is not open in terms of developing custom Flash Lite content for it. Sad. Although it is a ok PMP for MP3 … time for a return.

  7. Gordon Brown Says:

How did you switch the firmwae to UMS mode? Or, if you have the ums build if it, could you email it to me?

  8. James Eberhardt Says:

    Scott;

Thanks a lot for posting about this. I was going to try and pick one of these phones up while I was in Beijing. I guess it’s a good thing that I didn’t! It would have been one heck of a trip to return it to the store!

  9. Leon Says:

How did you enable UMS mode? Please email me the UMS firmware if you have it.

  10. desperateseeker Says:

Please please tell us how do you got UMS mode?

I searched google for two hours, all I found was a firmware zip from samsungplay.com but without any .exe or anything. So tell us the secret :-) thanks in advance!

  11. deperateseeker Says:

ok, i found some upgrade instructions.

    http://www.anythingbutipod.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5457

    didn’t try yet!

i really don’t get why there’s no (simple-to-reach) info on the samsung page. shame on them for this.

  12. Edgar_antonio Says:

i whana know how to get new games on the T9 or were to find games for it well my email id edgar_antoniogonzalez@hotmail.om if any one has any info i would apriciate it

  13. Zimm Says:

I just rec’d the T9 as a gift. It is my 1st MP3 player. Where is the best place to find music, video, text and game downloads? Is this devise compatible with iTunes? Thanks!

  14. warpedpipe Says:

I just bought this mp3 player with the hopes of running custom flash content, to my surprise it does not allow you to even access the existing flash games that come on the deveice. I shuld have suspect this since my phone is a Samsung and they are very closed when it comes to uploading custom java games. Let me know if anyone manages to get this one figured out. I was wanting to develop some games for this mp3 player. Oh well.

  15. Scott Janousek Says:

Just so everyone knows … the UMS firmware is located here:

    http://www.samsung.com.cn/products/mp3player/mp3yepp/yp_t9ab.asp

I’m not going to explain UMS versus MTP … you can look it up and go from there.

  16. Lauren Says:

hey i would like to now when the t9 comes out in stores so i can buy another pair of those ear phones

  17. Tanner Says:

I think the two games that come with it are embedded into the device. I don’t think they can be removed. As for new games…maybe you just treat them like a music file…

  18. josh Says:

has anyone succesfully uploaded any new games to a yp-t9? Ever?

  19. saera Says:

new games come with the firmware updates. there’s “honeybee” now in addition to the old two.

anyone else having trouble with samsung media studio? that thing is a peice of crap. the only time it showed my portable device’s files was the first time. after that, whatever i try to upload onto my t9 using SMS wont upload.

  20. saera Says:

    jk to my above post.

EVERYONE DOWNLOAD THE FIRMWARE. IT MAKES YOUR LIFE EASIER.

goodness. it’s about time they switched from MTP to UMS storage

    http://samsung.t9.googlepages.com/#upgrading-firmware

  21. DRPANKAKE Says:

This is so retarded, false advertising. I think we should jump in a bus and go run over the people who said u could put new flash games on here. And then punch every single one of them in the face. And god I wish that would solve the problem. Oh well. Any one figure anything new about this T9 mambo jambo?

  22. Miranda Says:

ok u guys talk way to smart but can u just tell me how to get games the way i will know how to do it

  23. Sue Says:

WAIT! I see the flash games. in the SYSTEM folder. I see
    _SYSDATA_GAME_Baseball.swf
    _SYSDATA_GAME_Honeybee.swf
    _SYSDATA_GAME_PizzaDelivery.swf

So i guess i can delete them. and add new ones. but where would i get games in .swf format?

  24. Sue Says:

    oi. nvm nvm nvm.

  25. Dragon Says:

Well, I’ve been having some problems with my YP-T9JABY/XAA, such as those mentioned above. I work 10 hour shifts, and the majority of it is spent reading, or playing around. Luckily, last Christmas I got this nifty little thing from my mom. I would die at work without it. But the SMS transfers over MP3’s and doesn’t sort them in folders by artist, album, or anything, just lumps them all together, but I like to change music on it frequently, after all, listening to it so much its nice to change it, but with them all lumped together, this made it quite hard. Not to mention the fact that my computer is somewhat old, and it takes forever to load the music folder. I was able to transfer from Winamp, but the last time my comp crashed, I lost a lot of info, and I’m still cleaning things up. I went to the afore mentioned website, anythingbutipod.com and it has helped a lot. I’m now running Firmware v1.6.

But after some research, it looks like games will ONLY be available in firmware upgrades for the time being. The main reason I can think of, is that the coding in the flash would have to be changed to fit the limited and different buttons on the MP3 player, as opposed to a computer. We can only hope that they will get off of their butts and make more for us. Pizza Delivery, where your only option is to jump, just doesn’t hold an interest for me. Baseball, can be a little entertaining, but for about a half hour max. I still have yet to really try honeybee, but it doesn’t look to interesting. If only they would throw some old atari or nintendo games over, I wouldn’t mind some mario or sonic.

  26. Raye Says:

Can anyone help me? We followed the instructions that came with the YP-T9 (AB) but cannot figure out the FM tuner function. We can hear the tunes slightly on a few frequencies but not well on any of them. The whole reason we bought this was so my husband could listen to all his loaded cd’s over the car radio while commuting. Very frustrated!

  27. marcuzi Says:

Got the YP-T9JBAB. This thing is SICK! Hooks up to my phone, WHEN SOMEONE CALLS I ANSWER MY PHONE WITH MY MP3 PLAYER through bluetooth while my phone is stashed away in my bag!!!!!!!! SIIICKKK! The call id on the mp3 player is a bit dodgy though, 4 out of 5 calls display a”0″ as the incoming caller… All in all prety sweet though and with the bluetooth I can swap songs with others.

Oh yah, lots of games of the .swf type here http://www.ingleby.com/junkx4_files.htm but I don’t think they will work ’cause of the buttons. Someone who tries the games on that site let us know… I’m too busy DIALING MY PHONE WITH MY mp3 player!!

  28. Lav Says:

umm i think those games should be developed purely for flash lite player… not sure tho, havent been able to find any flash lite game for the time being.

  29. Mike Says:

Hey about the flash games, you can download new ones and even create ones with the new firmware (1.80), although it’s supposed to be only in the Koreas. However, someone somehow got a hold of it, and here’s the link to download the firmware and some new games: http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/6/16/1182610/YP-T9%201.80%20%28Repacked%20By%20SyntaxErrorX%29.zip. You have to update the firmware first, and that will create a folder called games, to which you move the games. However, not all of the games will show up, as some of them are user created. You just have to use the file browser to play those. The ones by samsung are weird and in korean, but you can change it to english in the options menu, which is usually the third button (if not, just click around till you find the options). Hope this helps

  30. Mike Says:

This is the same guy from the previous post, the link included the period. Here’s the correct link: http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/6/16/1182610/YP-T9%201.80%20%28Repacked%20By%20SyntaxErrorX%29.zip

  31. matt Says:

does this product work with itunes

  32. Lachko Says:

Mike cannot be found the link. Please post a new one.

  33. kyle Says:

Mike the new link doesn’t work. post a new one

  34. Kyle Says:

I Found A New Korean Firmare Version 1.80, But The Site Was In Japanese. If anybody Can Read Japanese, Go to
    http://www.yepp.co.kr/
Then go to support, download, firmware, and click on yp-t9 version 1.80.

  35. Dragon Says:

If you go to the Anythingbutipod forums, you can get more up to date information on the ypt9… for the 1.80 firmware go to http://www.anythingbutipod.com/forum/showthread.php?t=15620
its the thread with all the information

  36. stevo Says:

hey i have the firmware with its games in a .zip folder on my comp. It does work most games are in korean but can be changed to english and you CAN ADD NEW GAMES. There’s a folder to put .swf flashlite material, the folder is obviously called games Once i upload it to a site ill tell you

  37. juanpablo Says:

well,i had recived a new samsung T9 and it’s the best mp3 player for me but I noticed I can not add more games so I tried to find a link to download the New Firmware 1.80
    http://www.yepp.co.kr/support/support_file_down_sms.jsp?pds_num=1674&seq_num=1
this is the link =) but don’t forget please!! to have the battery fully charged before upgrading the firmware (it’s US version 1.80,I though it was Korean but I’ve noticed that was US in my player)

  38. Jimmy T Says:

So I tried the other firmware, and it is cool enough but it kills subscription music. Is there anyway to use the other firmware but still be able to use subscription music?

  39. james Says:

hey, uhm i dont know about you guys, but i have 3 games on mine, baseball, pizza delivery and honeybee

  40. Stratos Says:

Hello, i read all th eposts and i want to know if you have found any solution how to use it as “Flash drive” and not as device. I have for example sound machine which accepts USB drives , but this model can not accept it, because it can not see as storage device.

    Friendly

  41. msalero Says:

Does any one has succed in pairing the YP-T9B with an Ipaq like hw6915 and meke them work?

  42. Viewtiful Says:

the resolution is wasted on the YP T9. Movies are kinda hard to watch when its so tiny and flash games can not be installed. i read through everything and it looks like no one said they haf installed games working.

  43. Phil Says:

Hey, I followed juanpablo’s link and updated my firmware to 1.80 but there were no new games and I tried to put games in the new “game” folder using swf and the format was “unsupported” does anyone know where you can get games that work with the 1.80 US firmware. I’m really content with the performance of this device but I was hoping there were more games like a blackjack game or hearts or something more engaging. If anyone knows where/how to get these games please let me know.

  44. Wumpa Says:

This site will answer all questions and has loads of working games.

    http://www.anythingbutipod.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=58

I only type this for future searchers, lord knows I found this page somehow.

    Hi

  45. Pat Says:

My son ran over my yp-t9jaby/xaa cord. (Don’t ask). I can’t find a cord to save my life. Not even on the samsung site. Any ideas on where to get a new cord?

  46. Dragon Says:

Call in to samsung support. Most of the time while they won’t offer it on the website, they should be able to sell it to you over the phone. Be prepared for high prices. I would look on ebay for for the price of used units, then call in, get a price and make a decision.

  47. Daniel Says:

hello can som1 plz tell me where i cn get the firmware??

    v1.8 preferable

cos i cnt find it on samsung website and cnt dwnload frm google
