Zodal creates PSP Flash game for MTV

Wednesday, January 31st, 2007

inthecrib.png

Zodal cooked up a PSP game for MTV entitled: In the Crib with Rob and Big (yet another Reality show), which is very cool.

Chris Blair (Zodal) was commenting on the team’s approach using Flash Lite mentality to make the game … which is a wise approach, since you’ll more than likely to feel like you were just in boxing match if you attempt a Flash 6 approach to such endeavors …

I spoke about this point, last year, at Adobe MAX (Las Vegas) in my “Flash Content for Consumer Electronics” presentation where I covered the PSP as well as iRiver devices (u10, Clix, e10) in some detail.

Check your “Damage Dots”

Sunday, January 28th, 2007

What’s a “Damage Dot”, you ask? It’s (usually) a pencil eraser sized dot placed inside your mobile device (typically a cellphone) to detect water damage. Sometimes there’s two. One near the battery compartment and one inside the actual device. Go ahead, check your mobile. If it’s new enough, and you are in the US (not sure about other regions), you’ll probably have one.

The dots change from one color to another upon sufficient water exposure. Typically this is either from white, to pink or red. Note: Sometimes there is pink lettering or markings to begin with. This gives the repair folks an easy way to tell whether or not a device has been otherwise “dropped in the drink”, so to speak.

Hagakure - Book of the Samurai #1

Book of the Samurai
“No matter what it is, there is nothing that cannot be undone. If one manifests the determination, he can move heaven and earth as he pleases. But because man is pluckless, he cannot set his mind to it. Moving heaven and earth without putting forth effort is simply a matter of concentration.” - Hagakure (Book of the Samurai), Yamamoto Tsunetomo

viliv p2 PMP launched in Korea (Flash Lite 2 onboard)

viliv p2

I noticed the viliv p2 PMP (Korean, English) has been launched in Korea.

This device features a Flash Lite 2.0 User Interface. No word on whether you can load custom Flash Lite content on the device.

There may be some preinstalled Flash Lite games, as the previous viliv p1 was Flash Lite 1.1 enabled, had a preinstalled game, and was open to develop Flash Lite content with. However, this has not been confirmed on the viliv p2 (yet).

Qualcomm BREW

Qualcomm BREW

Just an FYI … but, I am now an Authenticated Qualcomm BREW® Developer.

To those outside of the Flash Lite community, this may not mean so much … however for those Flash Lite content publishers out there, this means you have an additional resource to “tap”.

CMX Mobile Device Reference Resource

There’s a new initiative over at CMX called The CMX Mobile Device Reference Resource. It’s an attempt to collect capabilities for mobile browsers (CSS support for one). This is very reminiscent of the Flash Lite capabilities matrix that exists.

To contribute, use your mobile device browser to submit to the collection efforts by accessing the URL. You can also search on the current database. There is also a forums area for posting about test and capabilities results.

The Mobile Internet

There’s a free intro article entitled “The Mobile Internet” over at Community MX. The author, Adrian Senior, is covering some of the intricacies in browser based content creation using HTML and CSS (stylesheets & media types, browser inconsistencies, etc) for handheld devices. This is one of several articles.

Overcoming the Small Screen Challenge in Mobile Games

Tuesday, January 16th, 2007

The crew over at kuneri spotted a whitepaper just pushed from Nokia on “Overcoming the Small Screen Challenge in Mobile Games”.

It’s only a 5 pager, but it’s worth the read, here’s the abstract:

This article presents some best practices and visual examples of graphic design for mobile games. It also focuses on overcoming some of the main usability and user experience limitations: the small screen size (with portrait and landscape modes) and the mobile context.
