Flash Lite 3.0 feature requests

February 20th, 2007 by Scott Janousek

I think NOW would be a great time to start submitting feature requests for Flash Lite 3 to the Adobe Mobile team.

Felipe recently had a post about what developer’s would like to see in Flash Lite 3.0. I thought I’d cross post here, as well as leave comments open here, since apparently Adobe lurks here sometimes.

In regards to features … it’s imperative to not only submit features you desire, but give specific use cases for each. So, instead of saying for example, I want X. Try: I want X, because I will use it for Y, and Z.

This makes it easier for Adobe to make considerations about what to include/not include in the next release, and more importantly, why.

You can submit your feature requests to:
mobiledeveloper ATTY adobe DOTTY com

… comment here, or both.

I think that it’s very important can access to the camera and microphone to make applications were you can save video/audio via FMS. For example we can record videos with our phone and send it to Youtube, it could be cool!!

The possibility to access to the files stored at the phone can be a good point too. For example, a user can select an image and use it for games (a cut of the face), upload to flickr or simply make a screensaver with the images of the phone.

Recently a user of my website asks me if Flash Lite 3 brings with AS3. Maybe can be a good option, for their scalable architecture and the great new classes, but i don’t know how can this affect to the cpu or memory management.

This can be a good begining.

    Best,
    Raul

Should AS3 support be a MUST have in FL3? Well, if we consider the JavaME experience with OO programing and design patterns, I would say FL3 can suceed without AS3 support (There are millions of “workarounds” examples in JavaME showing how OO and DP dont work best on the mobile platform development ground as they work on regular Java). Developers are looking for more hardware communication between FL player and the device. Take a look at the Flash authoring tool evolution and notice how Macromedia focused on creativity above all other things and succeed.

The Chumby device is a live evidence of what Flash Lite developers are expecting for FL3: a larger and more creative way to interact with the hardware. The mobile user is seeking for the WOW factor and I, as a Flash mobile game developer would love if Adobe decides to take the same move Nintendo did on the Wii: Provide an unique experience while the competitors still do the same thing over and over.

I think, that we need somethink like “projector” for e.g. Symbian OS. As you know, a lot of phones has FL 1.1 only and there is a lot of people, who don’t know how to install FL 2.1 or higher. If we write application in FL 2.1 or higer, most people can’t use it and in this case we lost them. And the last reason, the real application (that can be installed to Application folder with unique icon) is seems coolest than some swf :)

Bluetooth support, and specifically the ability to get midi data over bluetooth and use it to play sounds with the chip in the phone. The chips in phones have some pretty great capabilities (sound generation, sound synthesis, sequencing, etc), and with Flash as the middleman between midi input via bluetooth and the sound chip you could make some cool things.
