Flash Lite 1.x book from Japan

Thursday, December 27th, 2007

I noticed a Flash Lite 1.x book was released over in Japan.

Japan has been a Flash Lite 1.x market for the last few years (since 2003-2004) … but generally speaking … so is much of the rest of the world, if you want to get the best penetration rate (in terms of world wide consumption) of your content!

However, if you hadn’t heard recently, the Japanese are (for the most part), bypassing 2.x and moving directly to Flash Lite 3.x with DoCoMo leading the charge with a majority of their new device lineup. Honestly, I can’t recall if SoftBank or KDDI have announced (yet) …

New Tamarin Virtual Machine targeted at non-PC devices

Thursday, December 27th, 2007

Ted Patrick had a recent post about a new virtual machine within the Mozilla Tamarin project (essentially a new branch of the project). For those unfamiliar with Tamarin, a summary is provided here.

From what I can make of this news, Adobe has a new build of a VM called “Tamarin Tracing”.

From what I could gather, it’s a VM that targets constrained environments allowing ActionScript 3 bytecode to be executed under low memory and less powerful processor conditions … that essentially means non-PC; which includes, of course: portable/mobile devices.

Another hybrid portable gaming device from Nokia?

Thursday, December 20th, 2007

Nokia - a potential handheld gaming hybrid device?

Engadget had a post speculating about some potential plans from Nokia to revist the portable gaming hybrid arena (info originally from unwiredreview.com) … possibly because of recent talks of a “PSP phone”? … or perhaps just because they believe now is the right time for another try?

If you think about it … they might as well, given that fact they are estimated to be launching their new NGage platform by end of this month. Perhaps this device is simply one more piece of the puzzle?

iRiver Clix+ PMP launched in Korea (Flash Lite 2.1)

Thursday, December 20th, 2007

iRiver Clix+

If you head over to iRiver’s site you can see the new iRiver Clix+ PMP.

As far as I can tell, it’s essentially the previous Clix plus DMB capability (of course, only in Korea! :) ), SRS Wow HD, and some other enhancements.

The spec says it has Flash Lite 2.1 preinstalled … which (as with the previous model) is utilized for games, user interface, as well as UCI.

If interested, you can get more info about:

Flash Lite Friday - Tip of the Day #12

If you're working with the chumby ... you can set a top level _root variable called _chumby_widget_done to a value of the string value of "true" to immediately advance to the next widget in a channel ... and without waiting around for the default play time of the current widget to expire.

Here's the code:

Actionscript:
  1. _chumby_widget_done = "true";

The core chumby player running in background checks this variable periodically to make your widget advance without waiting around for play time to expire.

Steam Iron - mobile RTS multiplayer game destined for Korean handsets

Wednesday, December 12th, 2007

Caught this via the guys over at finalhome.

Steam Iron appears to be a mobile RTS game to be played through GPRS in Korea launching next year. Looks very cool. It's made by mikoishi, based out of Singapore.

... and, no, to my knowledge, none of it is Flash Lite!

But, check out their promo site - www.steamirongame.com, it's a decent Flash piece.
